My mother was once chased, screaming,
by a headless chicken on the family farm.
And now, like a farmyard chicken,
my country has lost its head
and is running amok. As bewildered children,
we laughed and chased it, but when
it didn't stop and refused to die
we became frightened, brought in the experts
who were too polite to end the horror
but said instead,
"Give the chicken a chance."
