"1-Carrot Diamond Ring"

So this Canadian woman's ring was lost
and 13 years later her daughter-in-law
was harvesting carrots

and there it was,
a cinch at the waist
of an orange root.

The article reporting this
linked to another instance
of it happening halfway
across the world in Sweden

and I can't help but think
that carrots know a secret,
down in the dirt,
a secret having to do
with time and kindness -

those fractal green tops
coiling knowledge about
preciousness
back around themselves,
half-hidden from the sun,

until they give themselves up
to impart it to our bodies,

if only we would heed
the message.
