day EIGHT HUNDRED and THIRTEEN

THEOCRACIES

A line was blurred,
Or was it first drawn
in response to blurriness?
Is blurriness the way things are?
Is reason simply a lens designed
to please the retina?

In the original chaos,
power and persuasion won the day,
allowing high priests
to rule in the name
of God,
if the people
would let them.

But they say the Founding Fathers,
civic priests of their own,
separated church and state,
and here we are,
divining the best course,
without citing divinity.
Protecting, in a way,
A whole universe of spirituality
from concentrated power,
cloaked in holiness.
