poem of the day 01.06.11

cardinal

lone cardinal
standing on a drift
of gray snow
catches my breath
in the winter morning.

Is that a haiku

no. just a short poem. haiku, traditional haiku (and i'm not an expert on this) is typically 3 lines, the first line having 5 syllables, the 2nd line having 7, and the third line repeating the 5 syllables. some american haiku simply use the three short lines, and call it a day.
