day FIVE HUNDRED and ELEVEN

Citizen Taker

Should I be breathing,
I, a citizen taker?
Should I have access to those
white rooms, get care for free
by answering their questions correctly,
then taking the drugs that bind me
and brand me into their system?

How will my health play out within today’s
political climate? I who worked until I couldn’t.
I, who have no family but cats.

Headlines and gossips boast
about cutting medicaid and entitlements,
terrorize with eviction notices to
affordable housing and nursing home residents.

What does the future hold for me?
I hope for my cats to go first.
Then the rest can be in my hands.
My plans.

I alone, ashes to be
packaged, unnamed
and dumped.
