day SEVEN HUNDRED and EIGHTY

Goddess-zilla Gets Woke

“You look prettier when you smile!”
strangers shout as they pass.
At professional meetings,
her supervisor reprimands
when she objects to interruptions,
says she sounds shrill.

A creepy ex-boyfriend
Emails out of the blue,
asks for her telephone number
so he can reconnect, share details
about his adventuresome life.
Instead, she deletes his message,
makes sure he is blocked.

Rage bubbles inside her
from a lifetime of indoctrination,
demands she remain invisible, acquiescent.
Fury fuels her awakening,
a decision to break glass ceilings,
overthrow repressive conditioning,
achieve radical change.
