day ONE HUNDRED and THIRTY FIVE

Losers

They’re losers,
he says,
Losers.

I won’t call them monsters
cause they’ll like that.
Just total losers.

These are the words he offers
to the men and women
holding the shoes of their
daughters because
that is all that is left of her.

Losers is all he can muster
to the men and women
that will never tuck their children in bed.
That will never make them toast again.

That will never lay a hand upon their heads
and twirl a lock of hair between their fingers
absently.

That will never fill the hole
ripped through them
by a bomb full of bolts and screws strapped to a chest.

Losers
not winners
like he thinks he is.
Because he can only work
in absolutes
in black and white
right and wrong
losers and winners.

As if that means anything
to anyone
anymore.
